1.The Wimbledon Championships, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and is widely considered the most prestigious (138years old)
2.The First Wimbledon Finals was played on the 9th of July, 1877.
3.Spencer Gore (pix below) won the inaugural Wimbledon Championship out of 22players that participated.
4.About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the first Wimbledon Finals.
5.In 1884, wimbledon Ladies Singles was first introduced. And Maud Watson became the first female to win a Wimbledon open.
6.Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event played on grass courts.
(At one time, all the Majors, except the French Open, were played on grass.)
The US Open abandoned grass in 1975 and the Australian Open in 1988.
7. In 1947, ball boys were introduced to the game. Now they are popularly known as BBG "ball boys and girls"
